MARYAM NASSIR ZADEH
Fashion Shop, New York City, 1,200 SF
In collaboration Philippe Rizzotti Architects, Solid consulted in the design of the Maryam Nassir Zadeh boutique on the Lower East Side, that has since become a favorite of downtown fashionistas. The concept was to create a flexible space that is not only a clothing store, yet can function as a lifestyle and community destination. The minimal white interior is punctuated by the raw steel beams and weathered columns of the formerly industrial location, and the poured concrete floor alludes to its former use. Custom designed dimmable fluorescent tubes hang from the ceiling in rows, using the ceiling beams and exposed pipes as guides to create distinct strips of light spanning the length of the shop. A highlight of the space is a custom steel clothing rack outlined by a slanting trapezoidal form that extends towards the ceiling. Geometric outlines in white aluminum extend above the display tables, playfully mimicking the form of a glass display case. The abstract table tops are inspired by topographical maps, made from cast concrete to create a landscape of peaks and valleys with endless display possibilities. Minimal stacked maple shelving disappears into the walls and the custom sales counter is topped with a creamy marble slab, featuring additional built-in shelving for small objects on either side.
