CREATURES OF COMFORT
Creatures of comfort
Fashion Shop, New York City, 2,000 SF
Designed by Solid, Creatures of Comfort a purveyor of cutting-edge fashion, accessories, and home goods, with an eye towards up-and-coming designers and functional minimalism with a touch of whimsy. The historic building was a former police precinct before falling into disuse and being divided into artist studios, leaving the ground floor empty for many years. In order to prepare the space for retail, partition walls were removed from the ground floor to unify the space, creating an airy 2,300-square-foot storefront in what would have been the precinct’s lobby. This structural work opened access to the building’s courtyard and former airshaft, with hanging plants and greenery enhancing the light filtering through the windows. The design of the store reflects the brand’s ethos of modern minimalism, with custom built-in display racks and shelving lining one quadrant of the space, and lighter, moveable clothing racks and tables in the center. The built-in racks allow the store to maintain a functional amount of display and storage space, while allowing display furniture in the center of the floor to be reconfigured in accordance with their stock. This allows special latitude for unique concept collections and thematic installations, as well as for accommodating their ever-rotating collection of artwork and furniture.
