Designed by Solid, Atelier Mira a concept optical boutique specializing in luxury and special edition eyewear. The lab is situated in a steel cube within the space, with one corner cantilevered so that the wraparound window is uninterrupted by supports. The bright lighting of the lab contrasts with the faux-stained glass and warm wood tones throughout the space, placing the opticians in the spotlight as they work. Based in the French tradition of optometry as a holistic craft, the same optometrists who perform eye exams and fit the lenses also consult with clients to find the best frames for their face shape, style, and optical needs. Central to the space are custom consultation tables, where opticians meet individually with each client to find the perfect pair of frames. The tables are made from the same French white oak as the wall panelling, with a collection of mid-century modern chairs for seating. The cast iron building, located in Williamsburg, is architecturally unique for the area. In order to compensate for the weight limitations of its wood-joist floor, the flooring is a custom mix of resin and concrete for a material that is sturdy, minimalist, and lighter than poured concrete alone. The building’s interior stairwell produces a sloped ceiling on the east wall of the shop, which is offset by echoing the shape at the adjacent corner.
