CANTINE PARISIENNE
Cantine Parisienne
New York City, 2,000 SF
Designed by Solid, Cantine Parisienne, a modern bistro serving French-American cuisine and specialty cocktails, tucked away inside the hip Nolitan Hotel on Houston Street in Manhattan. The design takes cues from the minimal, neo-brutalist aesthetic, while incorporating touches from the classic French bistro style with its soft blue Parisian Gray color palette and windows displays inspired by Parisian artist studios. The exposed concrete ceiling and walls are offset by subtle white oak flooring and an impressive solid marble bar. Industrial-chic fixtures designed by Brendan Ravenhill and inspired by Jean Prouvé’s mid-century swing arm lamps populate the ceiling, connected by a custom-made continuous light rail that rings the space. A sculptural chandelier of delicate neon tubes, custom-designed by Bec Brittain, is cast directly into the concrete ceiling and forms a floating geometric outline. A poured concrete half wall has built-in magazine racks so that leisurely diners can peruse the latest design and fashion glossies. A gridded bookshelf separates the café from the hotel lobby, displaying an eclectic selection of design objects and art books. Photography by Michael Weber.
