Solid consulted Studio Ron Castellano on the design of 9 Orchard, a mixed-use commercial space in the former Jarmulowsky Bank Building in New York’s Lower East Side. At the time of its construction in 1912, it was the tallest building in the neighborhood, and is now protected as a New York City historical landmark. This building renovation includes extensive restoration work, including restoration of the facade, interior molding, lobby floors, and bank teller windows, as well as the reconstruction of the building’s iconic 50-foot cupola, or tempietto, which was removed in 1990 prior to the building’s landmark status. In order to accurately restore these highly detailed decorative features, the team is working closely with architectural historians and archival photos.
